EARTH

Dylan Carlson and his massively influential Earth band have been making their amazing brand of drone since 1990. Earth's early recordings were the main influence behind the rise of bands like Sunn O))). Below is one of my favorite Earth albums. It was originally released in 1995 and featured vocals on the track "Divine And Bright" by Dylan's best friend, Kurt Cobain. Earth recently reformed a few years ago and has a new album titled "The Bee Made Honey in the Lion's Skull" slated to be released sometime in the next few months on the Southern Lord record label.

KHANATE

Here is another personal favorite of mine. Khanate's sound is an acquired taste but once you get it you will be thankful you gave it a try. Members include the noise/drone masters Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), KTL) and James Plotkin (Phantomsmasher, Khlyst). Below are a bunch of high quality live releases. All are worth a listen. You can check out their studio releases through Southern Lord and Hydrahead records.

NINETIES STRAIGHT EDGE HARDCORE

Growing up in the nineties in Pennsylvania I was exposed to a large amount of Straight Edge Hardcore. North of me in New York the hardcore scene was blowing up with bands like Earth Crisis and Snapcase. Their effect could be heard up and down the East Coast. Two of my favorite and lesser known bands from this era were Canon and Abnegation. Both were from Pennsylvania and both adopted Earth Crisis's hard nosed Straight Edge approach. Although a lot of the lyric content could be questionable at times, there was something about the urgency of the music that attracted me to it. Below is Canon's one and only 7 inch release, Abnegation's "Sown In The Remains" 7 inch, and the original Earth Crisis "Firestorm Demo." I have heard from various sources that the "Firestorm Demo" was what Earth Crisis sent to Victory to get signed.

JOY DIVISION

I'm going to see Control for the third time at the end of this week so I thought I would post another Joy Division recording. "Live Les Bains Douches 12-18-79" is by far one the best live Joy Division recordings I've come across. There is a lot of interesting versions of some of their most well known songs. Give it a try.

REPOSTS

To everyone asking for reposts of files that have expired : I will try when I have time. I'm only one person and a busy person at that. This blog is for my personal enjoyment in sharing music that I love. I will try my best to help anyone out with requests when my time permits. I've received a few rude worded messages demanding I reupload certain expired links. If you want something ask nicely. Messages like that make me want to throw in the towel... but I won't.
With that said I have a bunch of new posts in the making. Stay tuned.

NIRVANA

By far one of my favorite Nirvana live recordings. Download it and be sure to check out the version of "Come As You Are." That version of the song is why I still respect Nirvana to this day. Check it out and let me know what you think.

THE VASELINES / BEAT HAPPENING

Here is a gem I found online recently that I wanted to share with all of you. Two of Kurt Cobain's favorite bands playing live together in 1988. Both band's sets are amazing and worth checking out. If your not familiar with either artists I highly suggest you find each band's releases.

XASTHUR

Xasthur is one of the most exciting one man black metal bands around right now. Hailing from Southern California, Xasthur's music is dark, depressive, and suicidal. Below are a bunch of harder to find Xasthur releases. Enjoy! On a side note, it seems mediafire is being a little weird with some links on previous posts. I'll try and go through and fix any problem links.

KENT

Kent are one of the most popular rock bands in Sweden. Unfortunately for those of us living outside Scandinavia we're less likely to have heard of them. Below are two albums were they attempted to have a international career and sing in English. Their albums after these saw them returning to singing in their native tongue. They have a new album titled "Tillbaka Till Samtiden" being released this week. Both records below are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

ISIS

Isis should need no introduction if you are reading this blog. Below are two live shows and the "Oceanic Remixes Reinterpretations" album. "Oceanic Remixes/Reinterpretations" featured artists such as Justin Broadrick, James Plotkin, Mike Patton, and others remixing tracks from the Isis "Oceanic" album. The photo above was taken by the talented Mike Jensen.

HUGGY BEAR

Huggy Bear was an English riot grrrl band, formed in 1991 in Brighton, England. Rising up in tandem with the Olympia, Washington-based riot grrl movement led by feminist bands like Bikini Kill, Huggy Bear called themselves "boy/girl revolutionaries," both in reference to their political philosophy and the gender makeup of their band. Below are a few of their albums and 7 inches. "Taking The Rough With The Smooch" LP is one of my personal favorites but all of their releases are worth a listen.

JESU

Hands down one of my favorite bands to emerge recently is Jesu. It's main creative force is the mega-talented Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Napalm Death). Jesu's sound is a mixture of shoegaze, drone, ambient, and industrial. If you haven't had a chance to hear them I highly suggest you get acquainted. Below is a live show from 2004 (thanks to James) and 2 tracks that were featured on the Japanese only version of the recently released "Lifeline" EP. Also below is part 1 of a mini Jesu documentary. The 2 other parts can be found on youtube. Enjoy!

KINGS OF CONVENIENCE

Here is another favorite of mine. Kings of Convenience are an indie folk-pop duo from Bergen, Norway. Consisting of Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe, the musical group is known for their delicate tunes, calming voices, and intricately subtle guitar melodies. Below is their first s/t out of print album and a bootleg rarities disc. The bootleg disc has an amazing cover of the Joy Division song "The Eternal." Check it out.
