I've been listening to Darkthrone's new album "Circle The Wagons" on repeat over the past week. The new record is a extension of the bands 80's thrash leanings that they've been exploring over the last few records. Highly recommended!

The also highly recommended Black Metal documentary featuring Fenriz of Darkthrone, Until The Light Takes Us, is now available for pre-order at Factory 25. I just secured my copy of the deluxe DVD edition.

Anyone who knows me knows one of my favorite bands is 108. No other band has had the deep impact on me that they have. Even today I'm still striving to live up to the philosophy of Gaudiya Vaishnavism that they exposed me to.
Below is a cassette the band self released in 1991. It's a mix of spoken word, demos of songs, and other random bits. I remember my friend Bryan giving me a copy of this when I was 15 and listening to it all the time. Recommended not only for the die hard 108 fans. You may even learn something along the way.
108's new record "18.61" is coming out on Deathwish soon. Even though Robert Fish has left the band recently they are still planning on forging ahead.

IN SEARCH OF...

While searching on Youtube I stumbled across episodes of my favorite TV show when I was growing up: "IN SEARCH OF...". Hosted by Lenord Nimoy, it orginally aired between 1976 to 1982. Being before my time, I was lucky to be able to catch late 90's reruns on the History Channel.
Each episode focused on a mystery like Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster, or Easter Island. One of the things that really made the show was the music by Rinder and Lewis. It was particularly effective in creating an aura of mystery and suspense. Think Boards Of Canada only more dark and 70's. Below is one of my favorite episodes about Coral Castle in Florida. If anyone has a collection of music from this show please get in touch! There was a record that was put out in the 70's but it was composed of disco remixes of themes from the show. It's almost unlistenable but I posted it below for the curious.

Here are some pictures I took of the new DEATH IN JUNE "Symbols And Clouds" boxset I received in the mail.

This very special soapstone and lazer-engraved granite release assembles onto one CD the best of 1992's “But, What Ends When The Symbols Shatter?” and 1995's “Rose Clouds Of Holocaust” albums plus two rare single tracks from the same period, generally considered one of the high points in Death In June's career. It also includes a second CD featuring re-recorded, stripped-back acoustic “Totenpop” versions of 15 of these classics, recorded shortly after the final tour in June 2005 and mixed and produced in December 2008.

The Mayhem / Morbid split bootleg CD "Tribute To The Black Emperors" compiles recordings of Mayhem's most famous suicidal lead singer, Dead. Since Dead killed himself before he laid down any proper vocal tracks for Mayhem's first full length these recordings are very special. The Morbid tracks feature Dead before he joined Mayhem. The Mayhem tracks feature the bands "classic line-up" consisting of Dead, Euronymous, Hellhammer and Necrobutcher. This is a huge piece of Black Metal history.

It was the early seventies and hippie cults and communes were forming all over the United States. In Los Angeles a group calling themselves The Source Family were following a long gray hair and bearded man by the name of Jim Baker, otherwise known as Father Yod or Ya Ho Wha. Father Yod and the Family owned a vegetarian health food restaurant on the sunset strip called the The Source. The family worked together in the restaurant and lived together in the Hollywood Hills. Under Father Yod they also started creating some of the most psychedelic rock music to come out of that era. Their albums are hard to find and sought after by die hard record collectors, sometimes fetching over $1000. Below are a few albums to get a taste of the group. "The Source" album is a compilation of interviews and recordings and gives a good overview of the group. It was taken from the CD that came with the book "The Source: The Untold Story of Father Yod, Ya Ho Wa 13, and The Source Family" which I highly recommend picking up. Things I do know about Christ. is that they were from Philly in the late 90s and I believe it included former members of Prema. Both of these albums came out on Temperance Records. Their music is a blend of bands like Quicksand, Prema, and Ink & Dagger. If anyone has anymore info please leave a comment. Highly Recommended! The pic above is of Prema. In 1992 Kurt Cobain set out to do a collaboration with one of his heroes, writer William S. Burroughs. The result is the now out of print album titled "The Priest They Called Him". It features a 9 minute track of William S. Burroughs reading a story while Kurt Cobain goes at it on a guitar in the background. It's an interesting listen for both Nirvana fans and Burroughs fans as well. Give it a try. Download also includes scans of the album package.

A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in the late 1960's and early 1970's. He became an influential communicator of Gaudiya Vaishnava theology to India and specifically to the West through his teachings. Below is an album of ancient Vedic songs performed by Prabhupada. JOY DIVISION documentary

Below is the trailer for the new Joy Division documentary coming to DVD on March 25th. It is simply titled Joy Division. I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advance copy and have watched it about 10 times now. It contains interviews with the band, rare practice and live performance footage, and even audio of lead singer Ian Curtis talking about a past life while he is under hypnosis.

Not to be confused with the Hole front woman and Kurt Cobain widow of the same name, the Olympia, Washington-based indie-pop band Courtney Love was formed in 1990 by singer-guitarist Lois Maffeo and drummer Pat Maley. After just three singles -- their debut "Uncrushworthy," "Highlights" and "Hey! Antoinette" -- and a handful of compilation tracks, Courtney Love disbanded in late 1991, with Maffeo going on to cult stardom as a solo singer/songwriter and Maley later running Olympia's noted Yo-Yo studio and its accompanying label. Ok, i usually never like to do reposts but this is the almighty INK & DAGGER were talking about and exceptions can be made. The other night a friend and I were going through photos he took at shows in the late 90s and stumbled upon a bunch of Ink & Dagger pics. It got me thinking about the many times I saw them play. They were by far one of the best live bands ever for me. Unfortunately they broke up in 1999 and shortly after their lead singer was found dead in a motel room. Their records are almost all out of print now except for their final posthumous record on Buddyhead (which you can download on iTunes). Below are the 2 only releases the band ever put out. Both were only released on 12" vinyl and are out of print. If you like these albums be sure to check out Mike Kirsch's latest project called Baader Brains. Baader Brain's sound picks up were PITCTIAH left off. Pennsylvania's Autumn were without question early pioneers of what's known today as 'screamo' due to their vocal style. Listen to "The Box In The Cellar" 7 inch to hear what I mean. Existing in the early/ mid '90s they they released two 7" EPs and a CDEP released by a subsidiary division of Revelation Records. I had the chance to seem them live a few times and was always floored by their heavily emotional live performances. Hands down one of my favorite artists! Gary Wilson is a experimental muscian/performance artist who has built a rabid cult following since releasing his groundbreaking album "You Think You Really Know Me" in 1977. He lapsed into obscurity from the public eye until the late 90s, when Beck was heard citing him as an influence, most notably in his hit single "Where It's At". He released a new full length on Stones Throw records in 2004 titled "Mary Had Brown Hair." I got in touch with Gary awhile ago over email and was able to purchase two early and rare 7 inches from him. Both 7 inches below were limited to 500 copies. Dear Ephesus was a band from Orlando, Florida in the late Nineties. They came out of the Sunny Day Real Estate/Mineral scene and like both of those bands had strong Christian overtones in their lyrics. If you can get past that you will be treated to some really great "post rock", "emo", or whatever phrase you want to attach to it. I got to see them play live when I was in high school and was blown away at the intensity of their live performance. The records do a good job at capturing the energy of the band. Both albums are out of print and hard to find but pick a copy up if you can find one!

Thanks to "robofagpants" for this upload. Here is some information I found on this rare Huggy Bear release : "This tape, the first official Huggy Bear release, was put out by Wiiija in early 1992. This release is a kind of "best of" (from what i have been told) of all the 4-track recordings the band did throughout 1991/1992. The material on here sounds more like HB than the earlier tapes and a few songs off this appeared on other things in the future. There was a very small amount of this tape made and it was sold at the Rough Trade shop (former home of Wiiija) and at HB shows. It was this demo tape that landed Huggy Bear the split 12" and later tours with Bikini Kill."
