SEA OF CORTEZ

Here is a relatively obscure emo/screamo gem. Hailing from Arizona, Sea Of Cortez released this full length in 1998 on Ohio based Voice of the Sky records. For fans of of Engine Down, 400 years, Maximum Colby, Sleepytime Trio, Moonraker, Unwound, and Ordination of Aaron. Highly recommended! If anyone else has anymore info or photos of this band please share it in the comments.

nick, thanks so much for this. I remember reading their name in magazines years ago and always wanting to hear what they sounded like (i was and still am a huge promise ring fan and always considered that their name suggested they were too, but from your description it almost sounds like i was totally wrong), i guess now i finally have a chance. again thanks!
btw, when did you change your blogs name?
now i gotta go change the link.

I know what you mean. I had seen an ad for them in HeartattaCk and thought they would sound like The Promise Ring due to their name. Their sound is more in the early Lovitt Records vein though. Totally worth checking out. Let me know what you think.
I did change the blog name. I thought the new one was more fitting after having some conversations with people over file sharing. I added you blog to my links. You post some really great stuff.

I live in AZ, I may know a little bit about this band.
Does the CD have the first names of the band members? I just want to confirm I am thinking of the right guys.

This is the guy that asked for the band members names,
Yeah I remember those guys, Not sure what Happened to AJ or Paul, But Jeff went on to play in a band called Death of Marat.
Death Of Marat had at least on CD, put out buy the guy that does Skyscraper Magazine.
Before Sea of Cortez I think Jeff may have done a 7" with another guy in the Death of Marat called "The Mars Observer Mission"

I know very little about this band, but here is what I do know:

They were from Arizona, and were on the label Voice of the Sky which only put out a handful of records, including this CD, a Sea of Cortez 7", a 7" and LP by Ambassador 990, a Behead the Prophet/Thrones split 7", and a Silver Scooter 7".

I saw Sea of Cortez and Ambassador 990 play at the Velvet Elvis in 1997 or 1998. They were on a bill with... Thrones and Behead the Prophet, I think... Maybe it was the Bloodbrothers, I can't remember... At the show I bought the Sea of Cortez CD, which has since been misplaced in a move, and I have been looking for it on eBay ever since...

I was corresponding with an old h/c kid in San Diego who says that at least one of the folks from this band lives around SD now. The guy I was corresponding with is also considering reissuing this CD, and other VotS releases, in a small run.

Hope that helps, somewhat.
